Sonic Lab: Build It, Bend It, Record It!

  • The Jazzschool 2087 Addison Street Berkeley, CA, 94704 United States (map)

Invent sound from the ground up in this high energy four day exclusive session for curious and creative middle schoolers. Campers will build their own electronic tone generator using real circuits and components, transforming electricity into playable sound. After prototyping on breadboards, they will shape and personalize their instruments by designing the controls and constructing expressive bodies from recycled and found materials.

Campers will also explore experimental audio design by learning the basics of recording, experimenting with vocal looping, and capturing original field recordings from the world around us. We’ll put it all together in very own own graphic scores (music you can see!) that we’ll use in group collaboration.

By the end of the session, each camper will leave with a polished recording of their original sound piece and a new way of listening to the world.
